Into the Prime Minister’s Suite: Check-in for Justin Trudeau

By now, we are all well aware that Trudeaumania is back, and it’s taken the world by storm faster than you can scroll through your Instagram.

The Duchess of Cornwall, Ivanka Trump and Angela Merkel are counted among the hundreds, though likely thousands, who have looked upon Canada’s 23rd prime minister with doe eyes.

Between jogging through a prom photo shoot in Stanley Park and donning Eid al-Fitr socks for Toronto Pride, the Prime Minister still needs a place to rest his head at the end of the day — and we’re not talking a pimped out campaign bus. From the nearly two years that Trudeau has held office, we share the most memorable hotels on his and Sophie’s itinerary across Canada and around the world…

Paradise Beach, Nevis

1/2

JT is certainly not immune to the mid-winter Vitamin D itch that sweeps across the country. When he, Sophie and the kids are not being put up by the Aga Khan on his private island in the Bahamas, you could maybe find them in Nevis. Their escape of choice? One of seven private villas at Paradise Beach where each comes complete with a private pool, kitchen, TRX exercise system and hammock to rock the PM through a well-deserved afternoon snooze.

Meliá Cohiba, Havana

1/2

On their first official state visit to Cuba, Sophie and Justin recharged in the evening at the Meliá Cohiba just one block up from Havana’s famed coastal Malecón. The hotel prides itself on its connection to the Cohiba brand of cigars, appropriately used by Fidel Castro as diplomatic gifts.

The Trudeaus were not the only celebrities in the house at the time. The Buena Vista Social Club has taken up residency at the hotel’s Café Habana and croons out classics like “Chan Chan” on the regular.

Delta Kananaskis Lodge, Kananaskis

1/2

Talks of pipelines and Alberta’s economy played out at the Delta Kananaskis Lodge last April. On the Trans-Canada 1, on your way from Calgary into Banff National Park, sits Kananaskis Village with the dramatic backdrop of the Rockies in full view. In addition to Main Lodge guest rooms, ministers could have opted for one of the duplex lofts with fireplaces and separate areas for working and sleeping.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler, Whistler

1/2

Though Trudeau may have been more of the couchsurfing type when hitting the Whistler champagne pow back in his UBC times, these days you may be more likely to find the Snowboarder-in-Chief dropping his gear off with the Ski Valet at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. Found at the foot of Blackcomb Mountain, this large-scale village resort has all of the luxe in-room amenities to come home to at the end of a day on the slopes and dining options like an unctuous round of fondue for your après.

Fairmont Queen Elizabeth, Montreal

1/2

As a Member of Parliament for Montreal’s Papineau riding, it was only befitting that Canada’s second Trudeau PM would celebrate his victory at the province’s (and therefore the city’s) largest hotel, the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth. Following this Spring’s renovations, this former Canadian Pacific hotel is set to charm guests looking for a little more in the way of an in-house urban market featuring regional food products and a state-of-the-art business campus for hosting conferences and meetings on-site.

The Algonquin Resort, St Andrews By-the-Sea

1/2

On the crest of the Bay of Fundy, St. Andrews By-the-Sea played host to Trudeau’s cabinet retreat at the beginning of 2016. Naturally, the resort town’s star accommodation, The Algonquin Resort was the venue of choice for budget talks. While the 18 holes at this plush Tudor-style property were closed at the time of the retreat, ministers and Trudeau could have spent their downtime charging down the Algonquin’s three-storey waterslide and keeping to a lean regime up in the fitness studio.

Park Hyatt, Hamburg

1/3

A bit of hotel drama is not uncommon when the world’s leaders all come to town. The G20 in Germany’s harbour city of Hamburg was no different. While the Fairmont Vier Jahreszeiten had been fully booked out by the Saudi Royal Family (that is after the hotel turned down a reservation request by the American delegation), Trudeau could have chosen the Grand Elysée (to mingle with the Chinese President at the hotel bar) or The Reichshof where representatives from Brazil, Vietnam, the UK, and India stayed.

The final decision was the opulent Park Hyatt. A central location along the shops of Mönckebergstrasse and a full range of elegantly-appointed suites were sure to have impressed the PM and his entourage. No word released whether it was Canada’s head of state or Russia’s man-in-charge Vladimir Putin who got the keys to the Presidential Suite.
